When You Call Him Father, Who Are You?

🌿 Reflection Question

What if the word “Father” reveals as much about who you are as it does about who God is?

📖 Scripture

«“See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”

1 John 3:1»

🌱 The Seed

There is something extraordinary hidden inside one of the most familiar prayers in Christianity.

When Yeshua taught his disciples to pray, he began with two simple words:

“Our Father.”

Not merely Almighty God.

Not a distant ruler.

Not an unreachable presence somewhere beyond creation.

Our Father.

We have repeated those words for generations.

In churches.

At dinner tables.

Beside hospital beds.

In moments of gratitude and desperation.

But have we ever stopped to consider what we are actually saying?

Because the word Father describes a relationship.

And every relationship has more than one side.

If God is Father…

Who does that make us?

🌿 A Deeper Look

For many people, religion has created an unusual contradiction.

We are taught to call God Father while approaching Him as though we are strangers.

We speak of His unconditional love while wondering whether we have done enough to deserve it.

We pray for His presence while believing He is impossibly far away.

We ask to be accepted while forgetting that Yeshua invited us to approach Him as family.

And perhaps the greatest tragedy isn’t that Father has hidden Himself from us.

Perhaps it is that we have been taught to overlook the relationship already being offered.

Paul writes:

«“Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba, Father.’”

Galatians 4:6»

Notice something beautiful.

Paul doesn’t describe a cry rising from a distant temple.

He describes it rising from within the human heart.

The Spirit cries:

Abba. Father.

Perhaps this is more than a formula for prayer.

Perhaps it is the awakening of recognition.

The moment we begin discovering that our relationship with Father was never intended to remain merely an intellectual belief.

It was meant to become something we know.

Something we experience.

Something we live from.

🌿 From Servants to Children

Paul continues:

«“So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.”

Galatians 4:7»

Consider the difference between the consciousness of a servant and the consciousness of a beloved child.

A servant may work for acceptance.

A child learns to live from belonging.

A servant may fear making mistakes because their position feels uncertain.

A child can learn, stumble, grow, and return without believing every failure has erased the relationship.

A servant may see provision as payment for performance.

A child learns to receive love that was never earned through performance.

This doesn’t mean children have no responsibility.

Quite the opposite.

When we begin understanding whose children we are, we also begin discovering what it means to reflect Father’s nature.

And what is that nature?

Love.

Mercy.

Compassion.

Generosity.

Truth.

The more deeply we recognize our belonging, the more naturally we can begin expressing those qualities.

Not to become worthy of sonship.

But because we are learning to live as children of Love.

🌿 The Mystery of Divine Likeness

Now the mystery becomes even deeper.

Genesis tells us humanity was created in the image and likeness of God.

And Yeshua says:

«“I and the Father are one.”

John 10:30»

Later, he prays that his followers may share in that unity:

«“That all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you.”

John 17:21»

What an extraordinary invitation.

Yeshua isn’t simply inviting people to admire his relationship with Father.

He is praying that they participate in divine unity.

Not that every human ego becomes the Almighty.

Not that we become superior to anyone else.

But that the separation we experience between ourselves, Father, and one another begins giving way to communion.

This is one way the ancient Christian mystical tradition understands participation in the Divine.

We do not become the Source of Love. We become participants in the Life of Love.

And perhaps that changes how we understand being made in Father’s image.

An image is meant to reveal something of the one it represents.

So when we love, something of Father becomes visible.

When we forgive, something of Father becomes visible.

When we care for the vulnerable, something of Father becomes visible.

And when we recognize the sacred worth of another human being, we begin recognizing that this relationship was never meant to be ours alone.

After all, Yeshua didn’t teach us to pray:

“My Father.”

He taught us:

“Our Father.”

There is no room for spiritual superiority in that word.

Our.

🌿 The Forgotten Identity

Perhaps one of the most profound transformations in spiritual awakening is moving from:

I am separated from God, trying to find my way back.

To:

I am invited into Father’s life, learning to recognize and live from that relationship.

The first can produce endless striving.

The second opens the possibility of receiving.

And receiving changes us.

We no longer have to manufacture worthiness.

We can begin discovering the dignity already given.

We no longer need to compete for Father’s attention.

We can learn to recognize His love.

We no longer have to prove our spiritual importance.

We can simply become more loving.

And perhaps this is what Paul was pointing toward when he spoke of Christ being formed within us.

Not merely a new religious identity.

A new way of being.

🌱 A Seed to Carry

The next time you pray, don’t rush past the first word.

Father.

Stay there for a moment.

Let the relationship speak.

If He is Father, perhaps you don’t have to approach Him as a stranger.

If you are His child, perhaps you don’t have to earn the right to be loved.

And if His image is present in humanity, perhaps every person you encounter carries a dignity that deserves to be recognized.

The mystery isn’t merely that we can call God Father.

It is what might awaken within us when we finally understand what we are saying.

🚶 A Walk in the Garden

Find a quiet place today.

Become still.

Instead of beginning with a long prayer, speak one word:

Father.

Then pause.

Notice what rises within you.

Does the word bring peace?

Distance?

Love?

Fear?

A sense of belonging?

An old feeling of unworthiness?

Don’t judge whatever appears.

Simply become curious.

Then ask:

“Father, what have I believed about myself that has prevented me from receiving Your love as Your child?”

Sit with that question.

You don’t need to force an answer.

And sometime today, when you encounter another person, quietly consider:

If Father is truly our Father, what might that reveal about the person standing before me?

Perhaps recognizing our own divine belonging is only the beginning.

Perhaps the deeper awakening comes when we begin recognizing the same sacred dignity in one another.

💛 Love’s Echo

Beloved,

You have called Me Father so many times.

But have you allowed yourself to be My child?

You have searched for the right words, the right understanding, the right way to approach Me.

Yet Love was never waiting for you to become impressive.

I have never needed you to perform your way into My affection.

You are invited to know Me, not merely speak about Me.

To receive My love, not merely explain it.

To recognize My presence, not merely search for signs of it.

And as you awaken to the love in which you are held, let that same love flow toward others.

For you were never meant to discover your belonging only to deny theirs.

Come closer, Beloved.

Not because you have finally earned the right.

But because Love has been calling you into relationship all along.

You have called Me Father.

Now learn what it means to live as My child.

Ashé. (May it be so.)
