🌱 Seeds of Scripture
The Seed Was Never Meant to Stay a Seed
Reflection Question
What if some things falling apart in your life aren’t dying because they failed, but because they have finished being what they were?
Scripture
«“Unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone. But if it dies, it produces much fruit.”
John 12:24»
The Surface Reading
Yeshua is speaking about death.
And within the story, his words point toward his own approaching death.
The seed enters the earth.
It disappears.
What once existed in one form is seemingly lost.
And yet Yeshua says that this apparent death is precisely what allows new life to emerge.
The seed cannot remain exactly as it is and become what it carries within itself.
Something must open.
Something must break.
Something must be released.
Only then can what was hidden inside become visible.
A Deeper Look
A seed has an interesting problem.
Its protective shell is useful.
Necessary, even.
Without it, the seed might never survive long enough to reach the soil.
But eventually the very thing that protected the life inside must break.
If the shell refuses to open…
the seed remains a seed.
And perhaps human beings aren’t so different.
We develop shells too.
Identities that protected us.
Beliefs that gave us certainty.
Defenses that kept us from being hurt.
Roles that helped us belong.
Stories about ourselves that helped us understand our lives.
None of those things necessarily began as enemies.
Some may have helped us survive.
But eventually Father may whisper:
“You don’t need this anymore.”
And that’s difficult.
Because we can mistake the breaking of the shell for the destruction of the self.
But the seed knows something we often forget.
The shell was never the life.
It was carrying the life.
When Spirituality Becomes a Shell
This can happen spiritually too.
We encounter truth.
We build language around it.
Then theology around the language.
Then boundaries around the theology.
Eventually we can become more committed to protecting the structure than discovering what the structure was originally trying to reveal.
The shell becomes sacred.
But Yeshua continually seems willing to break shells.
Who belongs.
Who is clean.
Where God lives.
Who Father loves.
What holiness looks like.
Who our neighbor is.
Again and again, he cracks something open.
Not simply to destroy it.
To reveal the Life inside it.
The Strange Wisdom of the Seed
Imagine digging up a seed every morning because you’re worried nothing is happening.
Yesterday:
Seed.
Today:
Still seed.
Tomorrow:
Still seed.
Then one day the shell splits.
If you didn’t understand germination, you might panic.
Something has gone wrong!
The seed is broken.
But the gardener sees differently.
The gardener knows:
Finally.
Maybe some of our greatest awakenings begin exactly like that.
A belief breaks.
A certainty cracks.
A relationship changes.
A dream ends.
An identity no longer fits.
Something that once gave us security suddenly feels too small.
We think:
I’m losing everything.
Father may be seeing:
Something is beginning to grow.
🌱 Seed to Carry
Not everything that breaks needs to be rebuilt.
Not everything that ends needs to be resurrected in its old form.
Not everything you outgrow needs to be carried into the next season.
Sometimes resurrection doesn’t mean returning to what you were.
It means discovering what the old form was carrying all along.
The seed disappears.
But the life doesn’t.
It expands.
Roots descend.
A shoot rises.
Leaves unfold.
Eventually…
fruit appears.
And no one looking at the tree mourns because they cannot find the seed.
🚶 Walk in the Garden
Think about something in your life that no longer fits the way it once did.
A belief.
A role.
A habit.
An expectation.
A version of yourself.
Don’t immediately ask how to preserve it.
Instead ask:
“Father, is this dying… or opening?”
Then imagine holding a seed in your hand.
Everything that seed may someday become is already hidden inside it.
But the seed cannot experience that future while insisting upon remaining unchanged.
Perhaps neither can we.
So today, give yourself permission to release one thing you’ve been holding simply because it once served you.
You don’t have to know exactly what comes next.
Seeds don’t carry blueprints they can read.
They simply surrender to the soil.
And somewhere in the darkness…
the shell opens.
The root reaches down.
The shoot reaches toward Light.
And what looked like death becomes something astonishing:
Life becoming larger than its former shape.
💛 Love’s Echo
Beloved,
do not fear every cracking.
I have not forgotten the seed beneath the soil.
I see what you cannot yet see.
There are things you have called endings that I have watched becoming beginnings.
You do not need to crawl back inside every shell that once protected you.
Some were only meant to carry you this far.
Let them open.
Let yourself grow beyond the shape you have known.
The Life within you is not disappearing.
It is reaching for the Light.
Ashé. (May it be so)
