Is the image of God something we possess, or does it reveal the very nature of who we are?
The Short Answer
Being created in God’s image means our deepest identity reflects the nature of the Divine.
We are not merely physical beings made to resemble God. We are living expressions of divine Life, created to embody Love, wisdom, creativity, and conscious communion with Father.
The divine image is not something we must earn. It is the foundation of our existence.
The Traditional Understanding
Genesis 1:26 declares:
“Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” (KJV)
Christianity has traditionally understood this to mean that humanity possesses a unique relationship with God.
The image of God, often called imago Dei, has been associated with our capacity for reason, moral understanding, free will, relationships, and responsibility for creation.
Many traditions also teach that humanity’s fallen condition has damaged or distorted the expression of that image, although it has not necessarily erased it.
These understandings recognize something important: human beings possess an inherent dignity that does not depend upon social status, achievement, or outward appearance.
But the deeper spiritual meaning reaches beyond our abilities.
What if God’s image reveals not only what we are capable of doing, but who we truly are?
A Deeper Look
The Hebrew words used in Genesis are tselem, meaning image or representation, and demut, meaning likeness or resemblance.
In the ancient world, an image could represent the authority and presence of a ruler.
Genesis makes a remarkable declaration by extending divine image-bearing to humanity.
Through an esoteric understanding, this becomes a revelation of divine identity.
We are not separate creations attempting to imitate a distant God. We are expressions of divine Life, bearing within us the nature of the One from whom we came.
Genesis 2:7 describes God breathing the breath of life into humanity.
The image and the breath together reveal a beautiful mystery: earthly form animated by divine Life.
Our bodies belong to creation, yet the Life expressing itself through them originates in Father.
Yeshua Reveals the Living Image
Colossians 1:15 describes Christ as “the image of the invisible God.”
Yeshua demonstrated what it looks like when divine identity is fully expressed through human life.
He embodied compassion, forgiveness, truth, and unity with Father.
And he did not present that life merely as something to admire from a distance.
In John 14:12, he declares that those who believe in him will do the works he does.
In John 17:21, he prays that his followers may experience oneness, just as he and Father are one.
These teachings open a doorway beyond simply believing in Christ.
They invite us to awaken to the Christ Life within us.
Yeshua reveals what humanity looks like when it remembers its divine identity and lives in conscious harmony with Love.
The image of God is not merely a spiritual label.
It is a living reality meant to become visible through us.
Living the Discovery
When we recognize the divine image within ourselves, we stop measuring our worth by our accomplishments, failures, or the judgments of others.
We also begin seeing people differently.
The stranger, the struggling neighbor, the person who disagrees with us, and even the one who has forgotten how to love still carries sacred worth.
Recognizing that image does not mean approving every action.
It means refusing to confuse someone’s behavior with their eternal identity.
And our relationship with creation changes as well.
We begin approaching the world not merely as something to possess or control, but as something sacred entrusted to our care.
To live as God’s image is to allow Love to become visible through our presence.
Love’s Echo
Beloved,
When I created you in My image, I did not give you a distant ideal to chase.
I placed My Life within you.
Before the world taught you to measure your worth, you already carried My likeness.
Do not search endlessly outside yourself for the Love I have placed within.
See that same sacred Life in those around you, even when they have forgotten who they are.
Let your hands express My kindness, your words carry My truth, and your presence reveal My Love.
You are My living expression.
Ashé.
