🚪 The Open Door: Have You Really Seen It?
What if familiarity is keeping you from seeing something extraordinary?
🌱 The Invitation
Think about something you encounter almost every day.
A tree outside your window.
The face of someone you love.
The sound of birds in the morning.
You’ve experienced these things hundreds, perhaps thousands, of times.
But here’s an interesting question.
When was the last time you actually saw them?
Not recognized them.
Not named them.
Not glanced at them while thinking about something else.
Actually experienced them.
Our minds are remarkably good at recognizing familiar things. We see a tree, and almost instantly, the mind says, “Tree.”
And with that recognition, our attention often moves on.
But the name is not the experience.
The word tree cannot capture the intricate patterns of its bark, the movement of its leaves, or the quiet mystery of something alive that began as a tiny seed.
Perhaps we sometimes stop looking because we believe we already know what we’re seeing.
🌿 The Experience
Today, choose one ordinary thing in your surroundings.
It could be a flower, a stone, a cup of water, or even your own hand.
Spend two or three minutes observing it.
But try something different.
For a moment, imagine you’ve never encountered it before.
Let go of its name.
Let go of what you know about it.
Simply notice.
Its colors. Its textures. Its shapes. The way light touches it.
Notice any details you’ve overlooked.
Notice how quickly your mind wants to identify, explain, or move on.
You don’t need to stop those thoughts. Just become aware of them and gently return to observing.
See what happens when you allow something familiar to become unfamiliar again.
✨ Your Discovery
What did you notice when you stopped looking at something through what you already knew about it?
And perhaps an even deeper question:
How many extraordinary things might be hiding in the ordinary moments of your life, simply waiting for your attention?
