Have you ever lowered your expectations to protect yourself from disappointment, only to discover you were also limiting your ability to experience joy?
Don’t Get Your Hopes Up
🌱 A Seed of Awakening
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
Hebrews 11:1
Reflection
How many times have we heard someone say, “Don’t get your hopes up”?
Perhaps someone said it to us when we were excited about something. Perhaps we have even said it to ourselves.
Usually, it comes from a place of protection.
We don’t want to be disappointed. We don’t want to feel the pain of something not working out. We don’t want to experience the heartbreak of believing in something that never comes to pass.
So we learn to expect less.
We convince ourselves that keeping our hopes small will somehow keep our hearts safe.
But consider what we are really doing.
We are allowing the possibility of tomorrow’s disappointment to steal today’s joy.
Think about a child who discovers something wonderful.
Their eyes light up. Their imagination begins to dance. They are filled with excitement over what might be.
They haven’t yet learned to measure every possibility against everything that could go wrong.
They simply allow themselves to hope.
Somewhere along the way, many of us lose that freedom.
Life teaches us that things don’t always turn out the way we imagined. And rather than learning how to embrace uncertainty, we begin protecting ourselves from possibility itself.
But what if hope was never meant to be a guarantee of a particular outcome?
What if hope is simply the willingness to remain open to goodness, even when we cannot see how it will unfold?
There is a difference between placing our peace in an expectation and allowing our hearts to be filled with hope.
Expectations often demand that life unfold according to our plans.
Hope leaves room for something beautiful to emerge, even if it looks different from what we imagined.
And perhaps this is where trust enters the garden.
Trust does not require us to know what tomorrow will bring.
It invites us to live fully today without allowing fear to dictate how much joy we are permitted to experience.
Yeshua spoke of becoming like little children, and perhaps there is something sacred in recovering that openness.
The willingness to dream.
The courage to believe.
The freedom to become excited about possibilities without needing to control their outcome.
Because disappointment, when it comes, is something we can walk through.
But a life spent refusing to hope can quietly become a life spent refusing to fully live.
So maybe it’s time to stop telling ourselves, “Don’t get your hopes up.”
Maybe it’s time to say:
Let your hopes rise. Let your heart open. Let yourself dream.
Not because everything will happen exactly as you imagine.
But because your heart was never meant to live imprisoned by the fear of what might not happen.
You can hope deeply and still surrender the outcome.
You can dream boldly and still remain at peace.
And you can welcome tomorrow’s possibilities without sacrificing today’s joy.
🌿 Blessing
May the disappointments of yesterday no longer determine the possibilities you allow yourself to imagine tomorrow.
May your heart rediscover the freedom to hope without fear, to dream without apology, and to trust without needing every answer.
And may you discover that even when life unfolds differently than you expected, Love has not abandoned you.
✨ Affirmation
I give myself permission to hope, dream, and welcome beautiful possibilities. I release the need to control the outcome and trust that I can meet whatever unfolds with an open heart.
🌿 A Walk in the Garden
Today, notice what happens within you when something exciting becomes possible.
Do you immediately begin imagining everything that could go wrong?
Do you tell yourself not to get too excited?
Do you hold back your joy until you know the outcome is certain?
When you notice that familiar response, gently ask yourself:
Am I protecting my peace, or am I protecting myself from the very joy I long to experience?
Then try something different.
Allow yourself to feel the excitement.
Allow yourself to imagine something wonderful.
And quietly remind yourself:
I can enjoy this possibility without needing to know how it ends.
Let hope become an experience of freedom rather than a demand for certainty.
🌱 Seed to Carry
Don’t let the fear of tomorrow’s disappointment rob you of today’s beautiful possibilities.
❤️ Love’s Echo
Beloved,
Who taught you that keeping your hopes small would keep your heart safe?
I have seen the disappointments you have carried.
I know the dreams that did not unfold as you imagined, the prayers that seemed unanswered, and the moments when you wondered whether hoping again was worth the risk.
But I never asked you to close your heart to possibility.
I never asked you to stop dreaming simply because life sometimes takes unexpected turns.
Your hope is not foolishness.
Your excitement is not weakness.
And your willingness to believe in something beautiful is not something you need to apologize for.
Let your heart open again.
Not because I promise that every desire will unfold exactly as you envision, but because you do not have to fear living with an open heart.
You can release the outcome without releasing the dream.
You can trust Me without knowing what comes next.
And you can welcome the beauty of possibility without demanding certainty.
Beloved, let your hopes rise.
You were created for a life of love, wonder, and possibility, not one confined by the fear of disappointment.
Ashé. (May it be so.)
